Green for Good

  1. Dont drill for oil... recycle... hybrid or electric cars and more stations!
    - Christine F., Valencia

  2. Recycle and walk more.
    - Craig A., Anaheim

  3. Compost all of your organic litter.
    - Jorge O., Los Angeles

  4. CNG cars! If you get one the state will pay half the cost to put in a fueling station in your garage. I'm paying less than a dollar a gallon and NO highway taxes!
    - Scott B.,  Corona

  5. Bring your own bag to the grocery store.
    - Sharon T., Chatsworth

  6. Shower with a friend!
    - Susanna B., Riverside

  7. I ordered 18 recycling bins from the Department of Conservation and placed them in the many offices of the building where I work and I have everyone recycling bottles, cans and glass. We use the money to help fund our holiday party.
    - Mickey M., North Hills

  8. More trees for greener earth.
    - Zarui C., Tujunga
  9. Use natural items such as lemon juice, white vinegar, salt and baking soda with water as household cleaning agents rather than harsh chemicals...(which are also occasionally packaged in hard-or impossible to recycle containers).
    - Julie N., Burbank
  10. Recycle all plastics including empty milk cartons.
    - Leonard R., Los Angeles
  11. Limit driving whenever possible and carpool. When you do have to drive, try to combine as many errands as possible to make it a more efficent use of energy. I now drive a hybrid!
    - Jan M., Huntington Beach
  12. Instead of a paper copy, have your employer email you a copy of your paystub.
    - Christina V., La Puente
  13. For the average household, most of the water we use is spent outside, washing cars, watering lawns, etc. Many people actually over water their plants and grass without even knowing, which wastes hundreds of gallons of water a week. Make sure to attach a spray nozzle on the end of all hoses, to ensure that they will not be left running. Also, never use the hose to clean sidewalks and driveways use a broom instead. (Also a much better workout!)
    - Tina P., Cypress
  14. My tip for a greener lifestye is carpooling. My husband not only saves money on gas, but has met four wonderful new friends. If we all contribute just alittle our world be beautiful place. Lets all go green every day not just for St. Patty's Day....K-earth you rock!
    - Maggie C., Burbank
  15. Be conservative with using paper towels. Try to use cloth napkins, cloth kitchen towels etc. Even though you are washing them which uses water, you leave less impact to not throw away paper ones and add more to landfill!
    - Greg S., Reseda
  16. Empty your car trunk... every little thing you cart around with you burns more gas!!
    - Steve F., Sherman Oaks
  17. Unplug electrical items you aren't using, like phone chargers , stereos, etc. As long as they are plugged in, even if not on, they still draw electricity.
    - Mark G., Palmdale
  18. My tip is to plant a vegetable garden. You can even use pots to plant some veggies on your patio if you don't have a big back yard. By using fresh vegetables from your garden, you will be eating healther as you will be eliminating the added sodium and sugar that is included in canned and frozen vegetables. In addition to this, the packaging used for those Cans and boxes are reduced and not filling up our landfills. Any garden waste products can be composted back into the soil to make your vegetables grow even bigger. The garden also makes a nice place to dispose of your used coffee grounds and tea bags. These will help feed your plants and breakdown to fertilize the soil. Besides all this, it's such a good feeling to eat what you have grown yourself and "Suprise" it tastes better!!
    - Pamela R., Westminister
  19. Donate all things you haven't used or worn within a year to the good will or mend. You save space in your home and help families who are less fortunate than yourself. You also can recycle and donate your time helping to clean up the beaches or parks near you.
    - Liz M., Mission Hills
  20. Instead of standing over the bathroom sink w/the water running and brushing my teeth, I brush my teeth while taking my shower, the same for washing my face, I do everything while taking a shower.
    - Kay M., Redlands
  21. When you are remodeling:before you throw away used appliances, or tear out those cabinets and trash them...call Habitat for Humanity. They will come and pick up your usable items, and then they go to help a family in need. The goods get reused, and you get a tax write-off. They can't take used carpet, or upholstered furniture, but you'd be surprised at the things they CAN take!! Lighting fixtures, switchplates, cabinets, that extra box of ceramic tile that's been collecting dust in your garage, etc.
    - Marge R., Tustin
  22. Plant water tolerant landscaping. Water in the early morning or late evening hours.
    - Carole G., Yorba Linda
  23. When on vacation, put a hold on your newspaper.
    - Chris R., West Hills
  24. My tip is to wash full loads of laundry, and dishes, so you aren't wasting water washing partially full loads. Also pack your lunch using reusable containers, so you have low disposable waste. Buy snacks in bulk, and repackage in reusable containers, to avoid all the trash accumulated by individual containers.
    - Charity P., Covina
  25. Use pryex or a corning ware instead of paper in the microwave! It is washable, doesn't give off any gasses and goes from the freezer, to microwave to the table without changing containers! U can pick it up cheap at flea markets, thrift stores and ebay!
    - Arlene F., Tustin
  26. 1. How about opening your windows in the morning to get that fresh cool air in and closing windows and curtains before leaving the house to keep the cool air in (best before 10am in So Cal). Then when you get home after work and the air is cool open everything up, if not the air inside will be much cooler than outside and a fan will be all you need. I do this frequently during the summer and it saves on air conditioning. 2. Water outdoor plants early in the morning and use a timer (mine is set at 6am). Ten minutes everyday during the hotter days is better than an hour at 6pm.
    - Sandra W., Irvine
  27. You can re-use styrafoam trays that fresh veggies are often packed in. They make great alternatives to paper plates. Also great for crafts (holding glue, paints sequins etc).
    - Nora O., Fountain Valley
  28. Refill bottles w/ water at water stations. insted of rebuying more bottles.
    - Chad D., Long Beach
  29. Keep drinking water cleaner by taking expired medications back to your drug stores and NOT flushing them. Use a USB stick rather the printing papers. Build your own computer and replace only parts that need replacing, rather then replacing the whole unit.
    - John B., Simi Valley
  30. Walk instead of ride.
    - Gordon C., Monrovia
  31. Keep your car's tires inflated properly. Proper air pressure results in better gas mileage and helps to preserve the environment. Less fuel consumption results in less carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere.
    - Cathy D., Huntington Beach
  32. Invest in a water purifer for home drinking water and eliminate the purchase of plastic bottles. However, if buying bottled water is a preference, always recycle plastic containers.
    - Renee L., Whittier
  33. Have your kids help you recycle all plastic and glass bottles. Give the money to your kids for their allowance. They learn the importance of reclying and responsibillty at the same time.
    - Mary F., Valencia
  34. Add this note to the bottom of every email you send out: Save a tree, please do not print this e-mail unless necessary.
    - Sam N., Los Angeles
  35. Use both sides of notepads.
    - Clayton L., Los Angeles
  36. When shaving, don't let the water run on and on. Only turn the tap when you have to. The end result: you save water.
    - Dan L., Los Angeles
  37. Send your children to school with trash free lunches. Instead of paper bags, baggies and napkins, use tupperware, and cloth napkins to help conserve natural resources.
    - Trisha S., Murrieta
  38. Please take a commuter cup for your daily coffee purchase, I have at least 6. Keep one for your walk to work, or drive, and keep one at work for that afternoon coffee break.
    - Stephanie T., Santa Barbara
  39. I always set the sleep timer on my television before I go to bed so it doesn't stay on all night.
    - Cindy D., Oxnard
  40. Buy fresh fruits and vegetables instead of packaged ones.
    - Julie F., Reseda
  41. When making copies use the "double-sided" feature. Also, save paper that is printed only on one side for draft copies (when a printed copy is required).
    - Shirley S., Hollywood
  42. Do not get get paper recipts from the bank or ATM saves paper over time by not wasting you can use the screen instead to get information also from the gas station.
    - Robert L., Arcadia
  43. Request online paperless statements from credit card companies.
    - Annie M., Los Angeles
