Back when I was working at KFRC in San Francisco, Creedence Clearwater Revival was hot on the KFRC Big 30.
One day, all the jocks received an invitation in the mail to join CCR at Cosmo's Factory for a “little party.”
Cosmo’s Factory was the name of their hot new album at the time. That's what John Fogerty and the boys named the building they had purchased and transformed into a recording studio. The building was in the industrial, and I mean industrial section of Oakland/Berkley, right next to railroad tracks.
A group of us from KFRC show up on that weekday evening. Check in at the door to find tables set up by a catering company inside. The doorman tells us to look for our name plates for our place setting. We locate our places, complete with a carafe of red and white wine at each setting; soon to be followed by a prime rib dinner.
After dinner John Fogerty, gets up on a small bandstand with the rest of Creedence. They perform a set of their hit songs. Afterwards, John Fogerty says: "Ya know me and the boys said that if we ever made a million dollars we’d like to have a big old party and invite all of our friends. And that’s why you’re here tonight. The bar is right over there and the pool tables are up in the loft. Have a great time and thanks for coming."
It was a night to remember and, of course, CCR didn’t forget their friends or how they got there - radio airplay!
I had the pleasure to introduce Creedence Clearwater Revival on stage at the San Diego Sports Arena when they opened for the Moody Blues back in my KGB days.
