The Active Lifestyle: Comments From Carson - February 20, 2008

by JIM CARSON

This past weekend was a three-dayer for me. How did I put it to good use? Starting Saturday morning, I hopped on my road bike for an hour trek over my local bike lanes.

By the way have you been watching the Tour of California? If you’re a bike logy nut like me it’s truly inspiring: The Peleton rode from Santa Rosa to Sacramento in the rain, the final leg is from Santa Clarita, ending at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, my old haunts. They’ll ride over Angeles Crest Highway from Santa Clarita enroute to the Rose Bowl, right by my childhood home on Lavender Lane in La Cañada.

Anyway back to my bike adventure: After an hour's worth of noodling around town last Saturday, my thoughts turned to the upcoming “Home” golf tournament the next day. So I’m thinking O.K. not to worry, I shot an 89 the previous Sunday goofing around in the “Skins” tournament. Forgetting that this is golf, and you heard the age old joke about why it’s called golf, because all the other four letter words have been taken!

My round started out bogey, par, double bogey, bogey... and so it went. Downhill from there, making me more cognizant, and giving thanks that I’m not relying on golf to pay the bills. Thanks to the Radio Gods for my day job. Keeping things in perspective, it was a nice day. The air was fresh. The birds were chirping. I got a nice walk out of it, not buying into Mark Twain’s belief that golf is a nice walk ruined. You see a golf professional win hundreds of thousands of dollars one week and miss the cut the following week, sort of like me, minus the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
