Wow, what a weekend! The weather was the best we’ve had in months and I cashed in on it. Friday afternoon, I returned home from playing “The Greatest Hits on Earth,” and got on the road bike for about an hour. It really felt good. Then I got up Saturday and did the same.
However, like my jogging days, there were days that felt great, then there were days where everything was just a little out of sync. That’s what Saturday’s ride was. But I pressed on, completing an hour and a half pedaling. I’m thinking even a ride that feels a little off is still getting the juices jiggling, and that’s a good thing.
Sunday I played in the men’s club “Skins” game. Shot an 89, not bad for my 14.8 Index with a few layers of rust on my game. During the round, I got to visiting with one of the players in the foursome. We got to talking about bike riding, and how he was hit by cars three times, and jumped off his bike avoiding a fourth collision.
The dangerous culprit is Santa Susana Pass Road. Even though it has a striped bike lane, the road gets narrow and curvy. Some drivers when going through the curve cut the corner, infringing on the bike lane. That’s too risky for my taste.
My neighbor’s son rides his bike to work over that same pass road on nice days. When I told him about the hits and near miss, he agreed.
By the way, the thing that saved my golfing friend from a fourth mishap on Santa Susana Pass Road was one of those little rearview mirrors that clip either on your sun glasses or helmet, he saw the car hauling butt coming around the curve behind him and he literally jumped off his bike. An inexpensive investment that saved a costly car bike crash -- an unfair match!
